Case Studies
There were high expectations from the very beginning of the Florida Power & Light corporate headquarters expansion. “No one believed we could do it in less than a year,” said Jason Carnes, an Elkins project manager who worked as an assistant project manager on the expansion.
Excellence in Project Management
Many believed too many complications surrounded the site. Elkins had to conduct three months of deep compaction to the soil on the site. The construction involved tying-in to an existing building. More than 250 FP&L employees and visitors come and go through the existing buildings every weekday.
With detailed planning and daily orchestration of the various team members and subcontractors, Elkins accomplished its goal successfully.
“The construction took nine months. It was a big job completed in a small amount of time,” said Carnes, who helped to complete the 183,000-square-foot office building. “To complete the structure, we poured five floors in five weeks.”
Adding to the challenge of the project were the tight working conditions and safety of FP&L employees. The new construction tied into the existing building only 3 feet away from a main entrance into the existing building. Elkins created a strict safety code, which included a segregated construction area and noise and dust abatement programs, to protect people entering the building. Thanks to a safety-conscious team, no employees, subcontractors or FP&L employees were injured during construction.
We are proud to say that the quality of this building is extremely high. No warranty calls have been made on this project.
